An RNA microarray, or ‘gene chip,’ is the standard products utilized to measure RNA expression levels. ‘Only a small fraction of genes are producing sufficient RNA to become detected with RNA microarrays,’ said Dr. Garner. ‘Many of the genes that make very small levels of RNA are non-etheless very important, however they fall below the threshold of recognition for current methods.’ The UT Southwestern technique enables researchers to review genes that previously weren’t accessible because there is not enough RNA to create a measurement of their activity. ‘We can get information on a much larger number of genes, and whether they are in a continuing state in which they can make RNA, using this system than by using traditional RNA microarrays,’ Dr.Kaiser Family Foundation. Chromosome disorders can arise when sex cells are formed Chromosome disorders in sex cells cause infertility, miscarriage and irregular numbers of chromosomes in neonates. A new study from Karolinska Institutet released in the scientific journal Nature Genetics shows how chromosome disorders can occur when sex cells are formed. Sex cells contain a control station for monitoring the mechanism that ensures that the correct numbers of chromosomes are distributed during cell division. Researchers have now shown that there is an alternative distribution mechanism in female sex cells that trigger chromosome disorders.
